Step one: Buy gear off the AH.
Step two: Enchant the gear.
Step three: Run an instance, watch upgrades rain down upon you.
Unbreakable Guardian -> Gavel of Peroth'arn
Drape of Inimitable Fate -> Cloak of the Royal Protector
Witch-Hunter's Harvester -> Pit Lord's Destroyer
That doesn't count the chest I'd bought off the AH last winter and also upgraded, but maybe it should, since in all technicality, it was an AH item that was replaced after only a few runs. There were also ret shoulders and various healing items, which almost made me consider trying holy, until I remembered that healing is the hardest role in the game.
So sadly, I am no longer wielding a scythe. And my reforging is all wrong now. But I can finally get into LFR! Should I bother to read up on any fights?

Uh, Klep, might want to check on that last pair.
The Scythe's an agi item. The Hammer beside it's Str.
Ayup. Crafted up a 365 caster mace fer the priest so's he could get inta the new 5-mans. Very first boss and he gets a 378 staff. Say la vee.
You should read up on the fights some. Yeah, you could get through'em all clueless, but there do be strategies even in LFR, and is a lot more fun if'n you has a sense of what the fuhg is goin' on.
If you don't plan on tanking, there's no point in reading up.
@Anonymous: I linked the correct item. It was an upgrade when I bought it. And it looked cool.
@Rashtag: You're right; it is more fun to know what's going on.
@Kring: I'll probably DPS, but my tanking gear is better.
If you do any encouter research, ensure it's specifically for the LFR version of the fight. Else, you'll be prepared to deal with mechanics that won't be there, or are literally 10x less dangerous.
I'd recommend doing at least a cursory glance at what happens during each fight before going in. wow.com has '5-second' explanations of all the raid finder versions that aren't too bad of a start.
