It confused me at first. Basically what you do is look for the big X or O; that's what you want to start with. Then on the same scale of the grid (at this point, the biggest), go to the one that is the same as where your opponent put their mark. The red will show where to put your next mark. Repeat until win, lose, or draw.
This may be revealing my stupidity, but I couldn't make heads or tails of that comic when I first saw it earlier. I still can't.
