I really, really miss that battleground. It was so neat to know that what you were doing made a difference within this epic battle. It wasn't this weird Ignore the Enemy and Keep Riding PvE event that it's become now.

Pardon me while I weep longingly over my hot chocolate...HNtGhttp://hownottogame.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5462978744516866472.post-16480206324068728982011-09-22T12:21:14.052-05:002011-09-22T12:21:14.052-05:00@vlad: I disagree with the "fuck all to do&qu...@vlad: I disagree with the "fuck all to do" part. I found plenty to do outside of raids. It helped that leveling wasn't such a short process.

Cata heroics felt harder to me than vanilla, maybe a little bit more than BC. By harder I mean that there seemed to be some sort of gear requirements to them, but perhaps more importantly, people had different expectations. We expected speed and no deaths.

@Shintar: I see that sometimes, particularly from Blessing of Kings. No idea why. I think it is interpreting a blogroll link as a "real link".

I did see that post. It made me sad. I loved old AV so much. I'm sorry to hear you never got to experience them, but maybe that's a good thing: nothing to miss.

@Kring: People do complain about the random part, though somehow they don't ever seem to fully realize what they are complaining about. I'm sure you remember old complaints about only getting Oculus (well duh, everyone keeps leaving it!).

I wish there was instead a "mark four preferences" system, much like in BC, though back then the maximum was only three and I always found that to be too few.Klepsacovichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07915576683657376929noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5462978744516866472.post-71747491998808953582011-09-22T07:54:05.218-05:002011-09-22T07:54:05.218-05:00Excellent post!

I believe these can coexist

... as long as the player is the one who decides which dungeon he likes to run and not some random number generator.

I'm surprised that no one complains about the RANDOM daily heroic. People complain about the random DAILY heroic and about the random daily HEROIC but nobody seams to bother with the RANDOM daily heroic. I think it's the worst part of it.

---

Oh, and with Firefox one can mark your links (which aren't links) and right click and select "Open Link".Kringhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03128630042421602039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5462978744516866472.post-26390441294814947982011-09-22T07:45:36.795-05:002011-09-22T07:45:36.795-05:00When you said you were apologising for the links, ...When you said you were apologising for the links, I thought you had done something screwy to blogger, because I noticed today that one of my recent posts claims to have been linked to by half a dozen of your old entries, despite of there being no evidence of it. Funny that.

Ah, the entrances to battlegrounds. I remember being so confused by them as a newbie. Why does going through the swirly portal not take me anywhere? What do you mean, I have joined the queue for something or other? I don't understand...

Did you see this post about old AV? Really made me long for it to make a return, and I never got to experience the really long matches in the first place!

Overall I agree with most of your points (except about the spirit plate), but I think this sentence just about sums it up:

Once norms are established they are very hard to change and I suspect that the needed changes would just drive away a lot of people.

We have to resign ourselves to being grumpy old trolls.Shintarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16758343475446510635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5462978744516866472.post-33115631102956614952011-09-22T07:28:49.781-05:002011-09-22T07:28:49.781-05:00The problem with 5 mans is that you either have th...The problem with 5 mans is that you either have the Wrath model, where people just charged through them and one-shot everything, or the Cata model, where they were almost at raid standard, and people just didn't want to work that hard. I guess you could put vanilla end-game dungeons and TBC heroics into the latter category, too.

End-game has always been about raiding. Back in vanilla, if you didn't raid once you got to lvl 60, there was fuck all to do. As it took a long time to actually get to lvl 60, you could however, spend a lot of time doing it all over again with an alt.
These days, levelling takes a couple of days, and no doubt everyone already has an alt or ten at max level, so the only way to keep those who don't raid still in the game, is to have dailies and achievements.I really don't see a solution to that.
I completely agree with you that solo players probably won't decide to go raiding, just because things got nerfed. You still have to find tanks and healers and people who know the fights to do that with. That usually means joining a pug, most probably led by raiders on their alts, who don't want to spend time teaching 'noobs' the tactics.
It will be no different with Blizzard's Raid Finder in the next patch.*vlad*noreply@blogger.com
